I see many patients for dermal fillers at my office in Toronto, Canada. They all have pretty similar questions. So, I wanted to compile a list of some of them and share my answers to keep you informed and enlightened during these uncertain times. 💉 I’ve never had lip fillers before and don’t want big lips. Can I start with half?
I don’t recommend half a syringe because once the swelling has gone down in 2-3 days time, so will your gorgeous new pout. You’ll be calling me begging for more! Many people forget about the swelling that will inevitably come from lip injections. For the first couple of days they are either freaking out about the size of their lips or LOVING their plump new pout. Once the swelling begins to go down, you’ll see the true results and more often than not, girls tend to want MORE. Half a syringe is what I would call a ‘mini plump’ and I would really only recommend this for someone who already has lip fillers and would just like to maintain their size since filler does dissipate with time.
🤔 Can you use the same filler for tear troughs, cheeks, and lips?
Nope! Haha, not the answer you were hoping for? Dermal fillers are kind of like skincare. You wouldn’t put hand cream all over your face or a face retinol on your feet 😂. Each filler is designed with specific function and placement in mind. The consistency and active ingredients in each filler will provide different outcomes in every area of the face, some negative and some positive. Some fillers are designed to be dissolved more easily than others and some are designed to last longer. Some provide sharper results for areas like the jawline or cheeks and other fillers are meant to provide softer, more pillowy results in areas like the lips and nasolabial folds. This is why fillers are FDA®-approved for use in specific areas of the face. Injecting a dermal filler with a thicker, more gel-like consistency under the eyes would be a big mistake! Thicker fillers are meant for areas like the jawline and cheeks so that they can be sculpted and withstand ‘high traffic’ from resting our face on our palms or sleeping on our side.
🕑 I have an event coming up that I want to look snatched for. When should I plan to do fillers ?
Oh you 💅🏼FANCY! I would definitely recommend 2-3 weeks before your event. Filler injections will often lead to a little bit of bruising. I’d hate for you to be less than stellar for your special event. Give yourself a couple of weeks to recover from any bruising or swelling. Use ice after your injections and maintain a healthy diet to encourage collagen production and healing.
🤷🏼♀️ I had cheek fillers done 4 days ago and they seem uneven.
Very few people in the world are blessed with a perfectly symmetrical face. Asymmetry is pretty natural and you might not have even noticed it before you got filler in your cheeks or jawline. The truth is that sometimes fillers will bring this to your attention a few days after injections once the swelling goes down. When the area is enhanced you are more likely to notice the asymmetrical features. What if I told you that some people are in-fact more attractive with asymmetrical features, i.e. Brad Pitt? While we all strive for perfection and symmetrical facial features I try to remind my patients that some people are actually more attractive with their subtle variations in facial symmetry. Within 2-3 weeks the filler will begin to settle and soften with a daily gentle massage, allowing it to enhance your features while still allowing you to look like YOU. Our minor quirks and facial discrepancies make us human… it’s what makes us unique 😉.
👄 I want full, luscious lips! How much filler do you think I’ll need?
Great question!! This is probably the #1 question I get asked. Mainly because people would like to know how much of an initial investment 💰 their new pout will be upfront. There are several factors to take into consideration - your lip shape, the texture of your lips, the top to bottom lip ratio and how big your lips are to begin with. If you have big lips you will need more in order to fill out all of the lines and see much of a difference. Especially on lips that have a ‘deflated’ look. Lips that have ample pink, but lack volume often produce the best results with filler injections. For most people to see results they can bet on 3-4 syringes in the first year and then .5 or 1 syringe every following year for maintenance. Keep in mind that everyone’s body and lifestyle are different and will determine how long your filler results will last.
